Fall Colorado Wedding | Intimate Mountain Elopement | Durango Colorado

Jenne & Robert’s fall Colorado adventure wedding in the mountains around Durango could not have been timed more perfectly. The first weekend of October saw peak aspen color and it was gorgeous. The rugged mountains dazzled with bright yellow when the sun hit them. Jenne and Robert planned an adventure wedding with their closest friends and family, and of course, their three adorable dogs. Their ceremony took place in a valley just outside of Durango, Colorado, with a gorgeous view of the surrounding mountains. Guests (ourselves included) were given a pin drop to navigate to to find the ceremony site – marked with a sign pointing towards a beautiful wooden arch. Jenne and her bridesmaids hid in the aspens just down the hill from the ceremony site. It was an ideal spot for some photos, and last minute notes in Jenne’s vow book. As the ceremony was about to start, Jenne’s father made his way to meet her while Jenne’s bridesmaids helped her along the small path to her “aisle”. Their ceremony was simple and sweet, with lots of happy tears, puppy kisses, and even a growler of beer. Proof that dogs should always be invited to ceremonies: when everyone cheered them on for their first kiss, their pups barked and howled right along with everyone. After the ceremony, we realized the sun was rapidly setting, so we stole Jenne and Robert away while their guests headed back to the ranch for the reception (and some tasty create-your-own burgers!) On our way into town the previous day, we had found a field with an amazing view of the mountains we knew we had to stop at. We couldn’t believe our eyes at how colorful the sunset was. Sometimes, it’s all being in the right place at the right time. I think we all had to tear ourselves away from the landscape, remembering there was a party to get to!

Olympic Peninsula Adventure Session | Seattle Wedding Photographers

Heath & Shae | Olympic Peninsula Adventure Session

When we created adventure sessions, we had two thoughts in mind. The first was for a couple who wanted to put on some hiking shoes and really get to a spot few other couples get to go for professional photos. The second was for a couple who wanted to showcase as much of what they love about the PNW as possible in one session. Heath and Shae came to us looking for the latter. They had both moved to Washington from the southeast and fell in love with the area. Even though they are getting married back home, they wanted their engagement photos to tell a story of their lives together in Washington. And of course they wanted to include lots of the beautiful scenery the state has to offer! They asked for our suggestions on location and we suggested an Olympic Peninsula adventure session, with stops at Lake Crescent and Ruby Beach. Since Olympic National Park is special to them, they were totally on board! Sadly we had planned to get some mountain views during the session as well, but the clouds did not cooperate. The forest was as lush and green as we’ve ever seen it, and they brought along the cutest bikes. They restored and customized the bikes themselves! So naturally we went on a ride in the woods before heading to Ruby Beach. Instead of the bright and colorful sunset we were hoping for, we got some typical PNW grey clouds and fog. If you can’t learn to love the grey clouds, can you really say you love the PNW, though? We loved hanging out with these two and driving to some of our favorite spots with them!

Salt & Pine Photography’s 2016 Best Images | Fan Favorites!

How has it been 2017 for over a week already? Each new year, we take some time to reflect on the images and adventures of the previous year. 2016 was definitely one for the record books (more on the details later this week). This week we’ll be blogging some of our favorite images from 2016, as well as a 2017 bucket list. But, we’re going to kick it off with what we like to call Fan Faves!

One of our favorite things to do is look back at social media to see what YOU liked best. Below are the 20 most liked, commented on, and shared posts from both our Facebook and Instagram. It is always fun to see what you liked best, and this is the first year a rainy or snowy photo didn’t take 1st place! We can’t thank each and every one of you enough for following along on this journey with us. We appreciate you!

Alison & Sean’s Adventure | Tipsoo Lake Engagement Photos at Mount Rainier

If you live in Western Washington, you can’t miss Mount Rainier on a clear day. When we’re out driving to a session or a wedding and Mount Rainier is “out”, we’re always wishing we were headed for its’ foothills or meadows. There is something about that mountain that draws you in, and it’s such a prominent factor on our landscape. The day of Alison and Sean’s Tipsoo Lake engagement photos was gorgeously sunny, and planned during the peak of wildflower season. We were so excited to get up to the mountain that we left a little early, which resulted in stopping at the tiniest Mexican Cantina in Enumclaw for the largest and tastiest burritos we’ve ever had. (You know a burrito is good when 6 months later you include a line about your burrito in the blog post for the session you ate the burrito before – just saying). Post-burrito, we headed the rest of the way up to Tipsoo Lake to meet Alison and Sean for their engagement session. An awesome thing happens at a session when you just click with a couple, and it shows in their set of images. What they wanted aligned perfectly with the kind of work we love to do. We hiked around the Tipsoo Lake area, grabbing every view we could of the mountain, and chatting about the outdoors, our jobs, and everything in between. Alison and Sean were laid back, and totally trusted us to do our thing. Mother Nature had a hand because the sun was as golden as any summer sunset should be, and we were on point with predicting the wildflower bloom at the lake. This session is a prime example of why we love adventure sessions so much. The extra time to get to know you, and explore an area in depth, results in an amazing session with a diverse set of images that showcase your personalities and relationship.

Caitlin & Adam’s Adventure | Deer Park Engagement Photos

Sometimes, you get totally lucky with a session and everything falls in place perfectly. I like to thing planning makes perfect, but sometimes the best things come about in a more spontaneous way. Cailtin and Adam’s Deer Park Engagement Photos were happened in the latter way. They were hoping to send out their Save the Dates soon, so we squeezed them into our summer schedule. Joe and I had been dying to get up to Deer Park Road for the first time, and we are so thankful they were more than happy to join us. We met in Port Angeles, all piled in the Subaru and started the drive up towards Deer Park Campground. As far as human beings go, we can tell you Caitlin and Adam are some of the coolest. We got to know them on our little excursion up the mountain, so when we all hopped out of the car (and got pummeled by summer mosquitoes) we were so ready to start capturing their relationship. Caitlin and Adam were able to be so vulnerable and expressive in front of the camera with their relationship, which made their images so easy to capture. On top of that, the scenery up at the top of Deer Park Road was even better than we had imagined, and you can see for miles. Some forest fires in Olympic National Park even caused the sun to glow orange with haze as it set slowly behind the mountains. Up at the top of Deer Park Road, the view of the mountains of Olympic National Park is unparalelled. It is the perfect spot for engagement photos of a pair of adventurous souls.

Linzy & Anthony’s Adventure | Fire Station and Lake Wenatchee Engagement Photos

Linzy and Anthony first met through work, when their companies were stationed at the same wildfire (Linzy being a paramedic, and Anthony a firefighter). Since their professions are such a big part of their lives, and their love story, it only seemed appropriate to begin their session at the Wenatchee firehouse, which was such a cool experience – especially since firefighter engagement photos had been on our bucket list for a long time! After photos at the fire station, we embraced the snowy weather and drove out to Lake Wenatchee for sunset. Washington’s State Parks always make great spots for engagement photos. Their easy to drive to, picturesque landscapes make perfect backdrops when we don’t have a ton of time to make a hike. It was a gorgeously sunny winter day, and we weren’t the only photographers at Lake Wenatchee taking advantage of the weather. The lake shore was an awesome spot to explore around, and we ended up taking an interesting route out to some fallen logs. As the sun fell, it lit up the lake in yellows and oranges, and the snow highlighted the mountains in the background making Linzy & Anthony’s Lake Wenatchee Engagement Photos so unique. Each time we’re able to make it up into the northern Cascades it’s a treat, especially in the winter!

Anny & Allen’s Adventure | North Cascades National Park and Diablo Lake Engagement Photos

Anny and Allen booked us for their North Cascades Adventure session after initially contacting us about their wedding. Unfortunately we were already booked, but they wanted us to take their engagement photos for them anyway! We love being able to create incredible photographs for couples, even if we’re unavailable for the main event. After a bit of back-and-forth, we landed on the idea of heading up to North Cascades National Park to adventure around. Its funny how some of our favorite sessions are preceded by such little planning. Aside from knowing about the gorgeous overlook at Diablo Lake, Joe and I arrived in the park just an hour prior to meeting Anny and Allen. We took a little drive up the road and scouted a few spots, but we made multiple unplanned stops along the way. Sometimes, spontaneity is the best! (and this is coming from someone with a strict Type-A personality). Anny and Allen are, as you can tell, adorable together, and they were up for anything in the name of adventure! If you ever get a chance, we’d highly recommend driving the North Cascades Highway 20. We can’t wait for our next chance to get up into the mountains there again!

Montana & Steve’s Adventure Session | Winter Artist Point Engagement Photos

Montana and Steve are both avid mountaineers, and when they booked their wedding with us we knew immediately an adventure session in the mountains was in the cards. After a little brainstorming, we all settled on snowshoeing to Artist Point this winter. We waited about 5 months for the weather to be perfect for their Artist Point engagement photos, and it totally paid off. Typically an easy drive in the summer, Artist Point in the winter is a whole new story. To be honest, we’re glad we had those 5 months to get in shape for the hike (which totally kicked our butts anyways). Montana and Steve were such great sports as we slowed them down significantly on the 2 mile hike. But, when we got to Artist Point we saw exactly why they wanted their session to take place there. We had 360 degree views of the surrounding Cascades, including Shuksan and Baker, many of which the two of them had climbed. After a quick breather and outfit change (you mean she didn’t snowshoe in that dress?!) we had a blast photographing these two on the ridge, trying not to fall thigh deep into the snow. We stayed at Artist Point until dusk, when the mountains lit up organge with the sunset, and then started back down the mountain, where we promptly lost a reflector off our backpack (RIP Neewer – whoever found it up at the Mount Baker Ski area probably has a lot of questions…) But we had to pause for one last shot towards the bottom and capture Montana and Steve in their gear, headlamps and all. We are totally in our element when we’re having an adventure, and it was amazing to share that experience with a couple who is admittably a lot more adventurous than we are! Thanks again for the class 2 fun, guys! 😉

Proposal at Rattlesnake Ledge | Seattle Wedding Photographers

Proposal at Rattlesnake Ledge

Darryl Ann & Joe’s Proposal at Rattlesnake Ledge

Exactly a month ago, Joe and I got engaged on a hike to Rattlesnake Ledge! The past month has been a whirlwind, and today we’re so excited to share with you the full story – and more photos – of Joe’s proposal at Rattlesnake Ledge (Thanks to our amazing friend, Robin).

March 4th started off more or less like a regular day. We had taken the day “off” (whatever that means when you work from home, right?) so we could take our friends, Jon and Robin, who just moved to Washington, on a hike to Rattlesnake Ledge. I had no suspicions when Joe steered me towards plain black leggings to hike in, instead of the pink and black ones I had originally laid out. The four of us, and three dogs, packed into the Subaru and we headed out to North Bend.

It was a beautiful day for a hike, and thankfully the trail wasn’t too busy. We made it to the ledge after Joe set a grueling pace up the trail (which looking back, is totally out of the ordinary). After we reached the Ledge, I stood back with the dogs, while Joe set up his camera, which he insisted on bringing. I thought he wanted to take advantage of the fact we’d be in such an amazing spot with a couple we could photograph! We got Jon and Robin up on a rock with a gorgeous view of the valley, and Joe started photographing them (I was shouting what direction I could from my safe position with the dogs). After a few minutes, Joe handed the camera off to Robin, and I thought it was our turn for a victory photo on the ledge. As soon as I got up on the ledge with Joe, I was totally distracted by the view down to the lake, and I tried to get Joe to turn around and look – but he was fiddling with something in his pocket. The next thing I knew, a gorgeous ring came out, and my first thought was that the whole morning had been a dream, because (and I believe I repeated this over and over again) “this is not real life.”

Not only did Joe completely surprise me with the proposal at Rattlesnake Ledge, but over the course of the next few minutes, a couple more surprising tidbits emerged.

Joe had purchased the ring just two days before we left Manhattan, Kansas in July to move to Washington. That means he had kept the ring, and the big secret, hidden from me for 9 months. (Apparently in the bottom drawer of his dresser, since he knows out of principle I won’t put his clothes away!)

Speaking of the ring, I unknowingly, more or less picked it out almost a year and a half ago when I pointed it out in a jewelry store window one night as we walked to a restaurant for date night. It caught my eye because it was so unique, since the center stone is morganite, not diamond. We subsequently spent the entire rest of that night researching morganite, and also found out the largest peice of morganite ever recorded was found in Maine! Unbeknownst to me, Joe went back to the jeweler for the very same ring a few months later.

One of the funniest facts to me, (more frustrating probably for Joe) is that this was the third plan Joe had to come up with to propose. He had the ring in his back pocket when we went Christmas tree shopping in November – and I have to admit that I was a huge grump that trip – so it didn’t happen then. He also had plans to surprise me while my sister was in town, on a trip to Hurricane Ridge. That trip never happened, because I ended up taking Sophie on an emergency trip to the vet that day! Apparently third time’s the charm!

We’re so excited to start down the journey of wedding planning, and building the rest of our lives together! If you have any advice or tidbits on wedding planning, we’d love to hear them!
